09/05/1069. Strider 5.8 1300 - 1900 So, apparently I haven't done this climb in 4 years. That's pretty ridiculous. I checked back in my logs and found this entry for this climb on 09/10/06:
Steve and I FINALLY got up to the ridge for a climb. We couldn't have picked a nicer day though. Perfect conditions for climbing. There was a nice, cool breeze blowing over the top of the ridge. The sun wasn't very hot. We actually felt a little chilly. Steve completed this one 2 times. He failed on his third try. I cleaned the bottom but I couldn't finish the top. I tried multiple times but by the time I figured out the sequence that I needed to do my muscles were just failing and I'd fly back off the crack. I couldn't finish this one the last time we did it either. That was 2 years ago. I'm saying right now that I WILL clean this whole route when we do it next year. No doubt.
I wasn't sure if I ever made it up this climb so that's why I consulted the log. There's one other entry for this one back in 2004 and I couldn't do it back then either. So, today, after about 2 years of rock climbing inactivity, I crushed this route. I failed on the first couple of tries but then, all of sudden, I just climbed up it like it was nothing. I was proud of that. I had the girls with me. Lys tried the easy route up to the "party ledge" but she only made it up about 2 moves. That was pretty good for her though. It's the first time she ever tried rock climbing like this. And she's not really a sporty type of person so it was impressive to see her get up as far as she did. DD didn't do quite as well. Her fear of heights as well as the onset of fatigue from belaying me and Lys hindered her performance. Plus, the sun was creeping around the ridge by that time so it made it hard for her to see. She was an excellent belayer though. She never really did much belaying before but she managed to "learn the ropes" and not drop any of us. That's key when it comes to belaying. Don't drop the climber. If you got that down then you’re certified. It was a beautiful day. Very much like that day back in September of 2006 that I quoted. So, I DID clean that route. It just took a few more years than I promised.
08/02/10Stoney Ridge/Glen Onoko 2 1200 - 1700 Since my "Rock Log" has been somewhat dormant in the past two years, I decided that I was gonna make an entry out of this outing in an attempt to bring it back to life. Me and the girls decided to take a hike. Although we didn't do any hardcore climbing (hopefully, we'll go for a climb before the summer ends) we did do some moderate rock climbing. So, it's official. I drove us into Bowmanstown to visit the old ridge. We planned to climb up to the top so that DD could take some nice scenic shots including a panoramic shot of the surrounding area. You have a nice 360° view from up there. Unfortunately, it started to rain a bit once we climbed up to the top. She only got a few shots from up there before we had to climb back down. But then it never really did start raining. In fact, it never really rained again all day. But, we decided to not climb up to the top again. Instead, we sat on a nice, big rock at the bottom of the ridge and ate some lunch. Then we rolled over to Jim Thorpe. We stopped at the Subway/Ice Creamery because obviously the peanut butter & jelly sandwiches were not going to be enough food for the day. We got a couple subs and some ice cream. I sent a couple text messages to my nephew who lives nearby there threatening to come up and visit him. We never did, though. We had a plan to hike up the Glen Onoko Falls. And that's what we did. There were quite a few folks around the bottom of the falls but once we started hiking, we didn't see many folks along the trails. DD took alota nice pictures along the way. We stopped at each of the big falls as well as some of the little ones. When we got to the last fall at the top, Lys and I decided to enjoy the cool water for a bit. Then we hiked back down and drove home.
08/09/0822. One Man One Nut 5.7 1200 - 1600 Me, D, Steve and Emma enjoyed a nice day at the Ridge. Me an’ D got there first. I set up the climb and the others arrived. Me and Steve owned the climb two times each. We did this one last time we were there. We had planned on doing the “party ledge” climb but there were two groups in that area when I got there so we decided on doing this one again. We also switched the gear over to the climb to the left of this one so that the girls could try climbing because they couldn’t handle the one that we were doing. It turned out that they couldn’t do the other one either though. Emma just didn’t have the strength and D still has a fear issue with heights so it was impossible for her to climb. I’m gonna help her break through that. After we were done we stopped at the Subway/Ice Creamery for foot-longs and Tandy Cake ice cream. Then we climbed up the Glen Onoko Falls. Steve and Emma broke out early and D and I went up a little further to the last fall. Unfortunately D fell while climbing up some rocks near the stream. It wasn’t a big fall but it was enough to hurt. Unfortunately I wasn’t behind her to prevent it from even happening. So I jumped down to where she was at to make sure that she wasn’t hurt bad and picked her up. She suffered some bruises and soreness but overall she didn’t get hurt that bad. She’s tough. She even kept hiking after she fell to enjoy a shower in the last falls. Then we hiked back down… in the dark. It was getting darker and darker as we were going down. But I lead us down safely. Me and Mikey B climbed down the entire falls in complete darkness once. It’s better to do that kinda stuff when you still have sun. It does look really beautiful at night though.
05/19/0822. One Man One Nut 5.7 1600 - 2000 First time at the ridge for the year. We had Nick, Brandon, Steve and myself. Steve and I hadn’t been to the ridge together since 09/10/06. Brandon was last there with us on 09/11/05. Nick hadn’t been to there with us since 06/19/04. So it was good for all of us to be back there together. We’re all a little older but we’re still the same goofballs. We had a good time. It’s very fitting that we decided on One Man One Nut for our first climb. That’s probably the first climb that any of us ever did at the ridge. It’s a good starter climb for the season. It’s got a tough part right at the bottom and then a slightly less tough part in the middle. Nick is the only one that didn’t make it past either of those parts but he did better than he usually does. I think he still has a little bit of fear in him as far as climbing goes. That’s what’s holding him back. I believe that he has the strength to do it. I was the first one to clean the tough part at the bottom. Although it took a tip from Brandon’s first failed attempt for me to see what I needed to do to make that happen. Then Steve and Brandon cleaned it smoother than I did. But now that I got it again I won’t hafta blow myself out next time trying to figure out the sequence. It’s all about the sequence. Once you get that all you gotta do is crank it.
02/20/08North Summit Climbing Gym N/A 1630 - 1930 When I left the house I decided to go a different way than I usually go. I ended up driving right into all the traffic in between the high school and the middle school. It took me 10 minutes to go 4 blocks. THEN I rolled down 15th and for some reason decided to pass right under 22 as if I was heading up to the mountain to go snowboarding. I think that’s what I was thinking. I was going snowboarding. So I realized that I was heading the wrong way and made my way back to 22 and on to 33 to get to the gym. I still got there on time. Steve was a few minutes late though. That never happens. So anyway I started on that hard 6. Still couldn’t even clean the bottom. I’m gonna finish that route one day though. I’m just gonna keep trying. Then I went on to the 7 that leans back and still couldn’t get past the crux on that one. Then I went over to the white 7 and couldn’t clean the roof. I’ll get that. Then I went to the other side and hit the white 7 with the green rocks. I pretty much owned that one. Then I owned the 6 in the corner. Then I did a couple sixes that I never tried before. Owned one and couldn’t really start the other. I finished off with the 2 5’s. I felt a million times stronger tonight.
02/06/08North Summit Climbing Gym N/A 1600 - 1930 It was just Steve and I tonight. That 6 that I wanted to start with was missing the starting hold. I tried it anyway and just cheated around the missing hold by using rocks from other routes at the bottom. It didn’t help anyway. That climb is a tough 6. I think that it’s more than a 6. Steve thinks so too. I was a bit burned tonight. I need more than a week in between gym visits. Steve was a little week too. He said it was because of a schedule change at work. He starts earlier in the morning now. Overall it was a fun night though. We attempted a good amount of climbs. The 7’s were tough for me though. 6’s were okay except for that one and the 5’s were good. I did that 5 in the corner that’s like a ladder of round rocks. That was pretty interesting. It felt more difficult as I got closer to the top. Don’t they all though? We skipped the pizza tonight.
01/29/08North Summit Climbing Gym N/A 1600 - 1930 Hit the gym with Steve and Ryan. Yeah, Ryan. That’s right. Didn’t think that he’d ever come climbing with us. But we kinda planted the seed back on Christmas night when we were talking about going climbing sometime. So it all came into fruition tonight. We also saw the return of the dog. We haven't seen that dog there for a while. The gym wasn’t really busy. There were a lot of folks in the boulder room and on the lead climbs but the top-rope side was pretty empty most of the night. That’s where I like to kick it. I climbed better this time. That’s how it always is. The more you do it the better you get. And you start to get to know the routes better too. I did better on the sixes. Owned the fives. The last one I did was a five but I was so drained by that time that it felt tough. Still completed it though. Next time we go I’m starting with that 6 that has the under-holds at the bottom. I always like to pick out a climb that I plan to start with next time. One that I thought that I shoulda been able to clean but couldn’t. We got a pizza with sausage and pepperoni at Sal’s afterward. That was pretty good. You gotta go to Sal’s. It’s part of the trip.
01/15/08North Summit Climbing Gym N/A 1600 - 1900 I’ll be damned. We DID eat pizza at Sal’s after climbing. It was just Steve and I tonight. Brandon must’ve been busy with his studies. Yeah, right! Or maybe he was working an extra shift at LVH. Oh yeah, I forgot that he quit. Oh, snap! I attempted 6 climbs tonight. I couldn’t complete the 7’s though. I think I served a 6 and another one that was a 5. The last one we tried was a quirky 6 that owned me. That was it. I could tell that it’s been a while. My power wasn’t all there. My fingers aren’t worn for it either. I tore up the skin on one of my fingers. I kept climbing though even though it was a bit painful. It’ll heal up. Whoa. I haven’t climbed since ’06.
11/16/06North Summit Climbing Gym N/A 1700 - 1930 Tonight was tired night. I was tired, Brandon was tired and Steve seemed tired. We didn’t do as many climbs because everyone was tired. Plus there were a lot of folks and kids in there tonight. It was kinda nervous. I did better on that leaning green climb. I failed on the red roof climb. But I did that quirky red ball 6 in the corner. I’m gonna do that one again next time. That climb is just weird. Afterward me and Brandon shared a pizza at Sal’s. That seems to be the standard deal now. Climb at the gym and eat pizza at Sal’s. I’m into it.
11/01/06North Summit Climbing Gym N/A 1700 - 1930 No failure. Steve and I started on that 8 that I failed last time. It was tough but I completed it. I also completed all the others. I did an 8, 6, 8, 7 and ended with a 6. My arms were pretty much done by then. Steve hit an extra 7 and some other weird climb in the corner that I forgot to check the rating for. But I was all about finishing the routes whatever it took. I had to hang there once in while and build up power to hit the next move. But whatever it took I just dug down deep and did it even if I had to use anger. Afterwards we shared a pizza at Sal’s and talked about coding which is what I’m doing right now.
